Understanding Addiction

Addiction is a complex disease – and West Virginia is at the epicenter of a national epidemic. With the highest drug overdose fatality rates in the country, the impact on our state, our communities and families and our future, is nearly incalculable, but hope remains. West Virginia University is uniquely positioned to bring together academic and clinical experts, laboratory scientists, patient advocates, policymakers and the private sector to lead the United States out of this crisis. West Virginia Home Visitation Program

The West Virginia Home Visitation Program within the Office of Maternal, Child and Family Health, involves partnerships at federal, state and community levels to assist families in meeting their parenting goals. Programs are available at no cost to families across the state. Programs are delivered by local home visitors who have received extensive training in evidence-based curriculums.

Programs through the West Virginia Home Visitation Program include:

• Parents as Teachers Healthy Families America
• Healthy Families America
• Maternal Infant and Health Outreach Worker (MIHOW)
• Early Head Start – Home Based Option
• Right From the Start

Burlington United Methodist Family Services

Burlington United Methodist Family Services (BUMFS) provides care coordination for children and their families based on responding to immediate client needs. By collaborating with the IMPACT WV Project they will expand community outreach, strengthen partnerships with other organizations, advocate for families, promote healthcare, educate families about access to resources, and identify the gaps in services to help overcome barriers and bridge services needed.

The IMPACT WV Project Navigator will be responsible for coordinating the care of multigenerational families impacted by substance abuse and or NAS. Services will focus on meeting “where the client is,” by responding to current client needs such as food, shelter, education, clothing, transportation, and/or childcare.

Wheeling Hospital

The Wheeling Hospital Perinatal Transition Program is a service for women impacted by substance use during pregnancy. Registered nurses provide individualized support and education to women throughout pregnancy. The IMPACT WV Project allows the Perinatal Transition Program to expand support through the postpartum period by providing a patient navigator and by working closely with established home visitation services.

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children are appointed to children in civil abuse and neglect proceedings to speak to the best interest of children and ensure the needs of the children are met. The CASA-Impact Project will expand on community outreach, strengthen partnerships with other organizations, advocate for families, promote healthcare, educate families about access to resources and identify the gaps in services to help overcome barriers.

The IMACT Project Navigator will be responsible for coordinating the care of multi-generational families impacted by substance abuse and/or NAS.  Services will focus on meeting ‘where the client is,’ by responding to current client needs such as food, shelter, education, clothing, transportation and/or childcare.
